    The European Commission will take the first step next week
to discipline Italy over its 2019 budget, three officials close
to the process said on Friday, after Rome defied EU objections

    Deputy Prime Minister Luigi Di Maio said on Sunday that 
European parliamentary elections in May will shake up the
political landscape and help Italy in its budget battles with

    Treasury starts offer of new four-year 'BTP Italia' bond.
    Higher returns on Italian debt are expected to attract
healthy demand from Italian savers for a new "BTP Italia" bond
on offer next week, in a key test of retail investors' support

    Telecom Italia (TIM) board appointed Luigi Gubitosi as the
phone group's new CEO on Sunday. Gubitosi is a former head of
telecoms group Wind and now state-appointed commissioner of

    Former TIM CEO Amos Genish said he would look for investor
support to call an extraordinary shareholder meeting to contest
a strategy turn at Italy's biggest phone group that led to his
own sacking this week. Top investor Vivendi  VIV.PA  is expected
to back Genish's move, a source familiar with the situation

    Italy is set to introduce measures to help create a single
broadband infrastructure company that could combine the networks
of TIM and smaller rival Open Fiber, according to a document

    BANKS 
    Italian regional lender Popolare di Bari said on Friday it
had concluded a securitisation sale together with 16 other small
banks to shed 1.58 billion euros ($1.8 billion) in bad loans.

    BANCA CARIGE  CRGI.MI 
    Fitch Ratings on Friday confirmed the Italian bank's 'CCC+'
long-term rating, removing a negative watch, in light of the
planned recapitalisation. It said however that Carige's credit
profile remained "highly vulnerable" and cut the viability
rating to 'c' to reflect the bank's weak asset quality with a

    President Pietro Modiano said in an interview with Il
Corriere della Sera on Saturday that the planned
recapitalisation will be attractive for all the bank's
shareholders. 
    
    CEO Fabio Innocenzi told Il Sole 24 Ore on Saturday that
Banca Carige private banking unit Banca Cesare Ponti was not for
sale.

    The publisher of Italy's best-selling financial daily Il
Sole 24 Ore was placed under investigation as part of a probe
into alleged market manipulation and false accounting which

in Il Sole 24 Ore, said on Friday it would take all necessary
