    POLITICS
    Italians voted on Sunday for mayors in almost 1,000 towns
and cities, providing an opportunity for far-right leader
Giorgia Meloni to establish her dominance of the centre-right
alliance ahead of a parliamentary election early next year.

    ECONOMY
    The Bank of Italy on Friday lowered its expectation for
economic growth this year to 2.6% from a forecast of 3.8% given
in January, citing the uncertainty surrounding Russia's invasion
of Ukraine. 
    However, the bank said its forecasts were drawn up before
national statistics institute ISTAT revised up Italy's first
quarter gross domestic product data on May 31 to show a 0.1%
increase instead of a previously reported 0.2% decline.
    This revision, all else being equal, would add 0.4
percentage points to Italy's growth this year, the bank said,
meaning it would probably be around 3% rather than 2.6%.

    The head of Italy's Open Fiber said on Friday a binding deal
to combine the state-backed network's assets with those of rival
Telecom Italia can be reached by an end of October deadline "if

    The partnership of Fastweb and Aruba is ahead in a race to
be awarded the contract to run the cloud infrastructure that
will manage Italy's public administration data under a project
funded by EU pandemic recovery funds, Il Sole 24 ore reported on
Sunday. The Fastweb-Aruba alliance leads a rival bid by a goup
made up of Telecom Italia  TLIT.MI , Leonardo  LDOF.MI , CDP and
Sogei, Il Sole reported.

    Shares in BPER closed down 12.9% on Friday, as a general
weakness of Italy's bank stocks due to the country's debt risk
overshadowed the lender's target to return at least 1 billion
