Tech deal lawyers join Paul Hastings from Goodwin, Cooley

By Sara Merken
Oct 16 (Reuters) - Silicon Valley deal lawyer Scott
Joachim is leading a team of private equity lawyers leaving law
firm Goodwin Procter for Paul Hastings, which on Monday also
added a capital markets lawyer from Cooley.
Joachim joins the firm in Palo Alto and will serve as global
vice chair of Paul Hastings' private equity practice. Two
additional technology-focused transactional lawyers from Goodwin
will also join as partners, Paul Hastings said, but it declined
to name them.
Paul Hastings also hired capital markets partner David
Ambler, who works with technology and life sciences companies
and underwriters, in Palo Alto from Cooley.
The incoming lawyers and Paul Hastings "really want to focus
on dominating the intersection of Wall Street and Sand Hill
Road," Joachim said, referencing the historic address for
venture capital firms in Silicon Valley.
Joachim advises private equity firms, venture capital
investors and tech companies, and has counted Accel-KKR, Goldman
Sachs and messaging platform Symphony Communications as clients,
his new firm said. He joined Goodwin in 2018 from Fenwick &
West, where he founded and led the private equity and financial
technology practices.
Ambler was part of teams at Cooley that advised on initial
public offerings for companies including DocuSign and Procore
Technologies, Paul Hastings said.
Paul Hastings stood out as being "uniquely serious" about
expanding its private equity and traditional Silicon
Valley-focused corporate practices, Ambler said.
Spokespeople for Goodwin and Cooley said they wish Joachim
and Ambler well, respectively.
Paul Hastings last week hired three partners to expand its
insurance industry M&A and regulatory groups.
