Poland's Grupa Azoty flags weak demand for nitrogen-based fertilizers in Q3
Poland's Grupa Azoty flags weak demand for nitrogen-based fertilizers in Q3 Sept 11 (Reuters) - Polish fertilizer and chemicals maker Grupa Azoty ATTP.WA expects demand for nitrogen-based fertilizers to be seasonally and regionally weak in the third quarter, it said on Thursday, after it reported lower volumes in its agricultural segment for the second quarter.
Farms continue to suffer from high production costs, low selling prices of their produce and regulatory uncertainty, Azoty said, adding that winter frosts and summer heatwaves and droughts had also taken a toll on yields.
While concerns over the Strait of Hormuz closure initially lifted fertilizer prices, peers including Yara, Nutrien and Mosaic later reported weaker sales volumes as farmers delayed purchases to save money.
"Market conditions remain challenging in the third quarter, particularly due to the rise in gas prices," CEO Marcin Celejewski said.
Because of this, Azoty needs to practice discipline and further improve its efficiency, he added.
Forecasts suggest European gas prices are unlikely to go quickly back to levels seen before the Iran war, Azoty said.
Azoty pre-released Q2 results earlier in September, narrowing its net loss to 338.9 million zlotys ($91.0 million) from 514.9 million zlotys a year ago.
