India Stocks: Indian shares muted as HDFC Bank counters oil-led optimism

INDIA STOCKS-Indian shares muted as HDFC Bank counters oil-led optimism

Updates for morning trade

By Bharath Rajeswaran

- India's benchmark indexes were flat early on Thursday, lagging broader Asian gains as a fall in heavyweight HDFC Bank after a U.S. class-action lawsuit offset lower oil prices on hopes of easing Middle East tensions.

The Nifty 50 .NSEI fell 0.06% to 24,191.85, while the BSE Sensex .BSESN slipped 0.12% to 77,379.50 as of 10:13 a.m. IST.

HDFC Bank HDBK.NS fell 1% after a securities lawsuit in the U.S. was filed against the lender and two senior executives.

Seven of the 16 major sectors advanced. Small-caps .NIFSMCP100 and mid-caps .NIFMDCP100 traded flat.

Brent crude LCOc1 fell 0.5% to $87.4 a barrel after Iran said it was working with Oman to finalise details of an agreement concerning the Strait of Hormuz, easing concerns over prolonged oil supply disruptions from the Middle East conflict.

Qatar's prime minister is also scheduled to visit Iran on Thursday to revive diplomatic talks to end the conflict, now nearing six months.O/R

Other Asian markets logged gains, led by technology stocks after Nvidia NVDA.O reported quarterly revenue that more than doubled and forecast third-quarter revenue above Wall Street expectations.

"Although easing concerns over the Strait of Hormuz and softer crude oil prices have provided some relief to market sentiment, the benchmarks continue to remain in a consolidation phase with overall bias staying sideways to cautious," said Sachin Gupta, vice president of technical research at Choice Broking.

Among stocks, Bombay Burmah Trading Corporation BBRM.NS surged 14.2% after the Supreme Court recalled an earlier observation related to a 46.55-billion-rupee lease-rent claim, offering relief to the company.

Bharat Electronics BAJE.NS rose 1% after securing orders worth 7.30 billion rupees since August 10.

ICICI Prudential AMC IICL.NS lost 3.7% after its promoter, British insurer Prudential Plc PRU.L planned to sell up to a 2% stake in the company to help meet minimum public shareholding requirements.
