Italy's Eni, Hera complete €100-million environmental hub in Ravenna

Italy's Eni, Hera complete €100-million environmental hub in Ravenna

- Italian energy group Eni ENI.MI and local utility Hera HRA.MI said on Tuesday they had completed a €100-million ($116 million) environmental hub in Ravenna, northeast Italy, for circular economy activities and industrial waste management.

  • The Ravenna Environmental Hub covers 26 hectares.

  • It was developed through Eni's unit Eni Rewind and Hera's waste management division Herambiente.

  • The project, launched in 2019, includes a multifunctional waste pre-treatment platform operated by HEA, a joint venture between Hera HRA.MI and Eni ENI.MI.

  • The HEA platform will treat up to 60,000 tonnes of special solid and liquid waste per year from industrial activities and recovery projects.

  • The hub also hosts an Eni Rewind biorecovery plant with an annual capacity of 80,000 tonnes to treat hydrocarbon-contaminated soils from remediation activities.

  • It includes a 6 megawatt peak photovoltaic plant built by Eni-controlled Plenitude, which began operating in 2024.

  • The solar plant covers 11 hectares and has more than 10,000 panels.

  • The companies said an experimental energy storage system using vanadium flow batteries was completed at the site in April 2026 and connected to the solar plant.

  • The plants are expected to start operating in July.
