New Electricity Supply Agreement
Jersey Electricity plc announces that, in partnership with Guernsey Electricity Limited through their jointly owned company Channel Islands Electricity Grid Limited, it has entered into a new electricity supply agreement with EDF.
The agreement will commence on 1 January 2028, following the expiry of the current arrangement with EDF on 31 December 2027, with a four-year term.
The new agreement continues the strong relationship between Jersey Electricity, Guernsey Electricity and EDF and represents an important element of Jersey Electricity's long-term energy procurement strategy.
Jersey currently imports the significant majority of its electricity requirements from France, principally from low-carbon nuclear and renewable generation. This imported supply, together with the Company's subsea cables, local generation capability and electricity network, remains fundamental to the security and resilience of the Island's electricity system.
The new agreement provides greater flexibility over the timing and management of future electricity purchases. This will enable Jersey Electricity to respond to changing market conditions and demand variability. JE will continue to use appropriate purchasing and hedging strategies to manage its exposure to movements in international energy markets alongside its governance framework, forecasting processes and operational controls.
While the new arrangements provide greater flexibility than the current agreement, the Company will continue to take a prudent and disciplined approach to energy procurement, with the objective of continuing to deliver competitive and stable electricity prices for customers.
The agreement also provides an important supply framework as electricity demand is expected to increase through the continued electrification of heating and transport and the transition away from fossil fuels.
Consistent with the Company's previously published outlook, the Board believes that the new agreement provides an appropriate balance between security of supply, commercial flexibility and the ability to manage future energy costs in a disciplined manner.
