It's the tallest tower in Japan and a top tourist favorite, but news the
Skytree's earthquake shock absorbers were installed by a company that's
admitted to falsifying data could shatter that reputation, not to mention the
safety of Japan's buildings as a whole. KYB Corporation's products are used in
hundreds of building in the country including venues for the 2020 Olympics.
The government, which has ordered the automotive firm to fix its products
immediately, says it's unclear whether they pose a structural threat to the
buildings although there's no risk of collapse. Regardless, it's unlikely to
go down well in one of the world's most quake-prone countries. Government
ministers are now investigating whether other Olympic venues have used KYB
products in a scandal that has the potential to go global too. The firm
operates in more than two dozen other countries, investors clearly shaken by
that. Shares in the firm ended down by almost 11%
