Nasdaq short interest up 2.4% in late August
Nasdaq short interest up 2.4% in late August NEW YORK, Sept 10 (Reuters) - Short interest on the Nasdaq rose 2.4% in late August, the exchange said on Thursday.
As of August 31, short interest rose to about 22.585 billion shares, compared with 22.048 billion shares as of August 14.
Investors who sell securities 'short' borrow shares and then sell them, expecting the stock to fall so they can buy the shares back at the lower price, return them to the lender and pocket the difference.
Shorting can also be part of a hedging strategy.
