** Australia's gold index .AXGD jumps as much as 5.3%, its highest level since July 23
** Gold prices rise over 3% GOL/
** Shares of gold miners Northern Star Resources NST.AX, St Barbara SBM.AX up 3.3% and 7.4% respectively
** Sub-index has fallen 16.7% this year, including session moves, underperforming benchmark ASX 200's .AXJO 1.6% rise
