Corrects year-ago profit figure in paragraph 2 to 36.59 billion rupees, not 35.25 billion rupees
Jan 28 (Reuters) - Maruti Suzuki MRTI.NS, India's top carmaker by sales, posted a smaller-than-expected quarterly profit on Wednesday, hurt by lower export proceeds, which partly offset a jump in domestic sales.
The Swift small car manufacturer reported a profit of 37.94 billion rupees ($413.5 million) for the October-December period, up from 36.59 billion rupees a year before, but fell short of analysts' expectation of 42.61 billion rupees, per data compiled by LSEG.
The quarterly results also included a one-time charge of 5.94 billion rupees tied to India's newly-enacted labour codes.
Maruti kicks off the earnings season for Indian automakers in a quarter where car sales hit a record high thanks to the country's tax cuts that made most models more affordable.
