Hitachi Energy wins €770 million contract for Italy-Tunisia power link MILAN, June 24 (Reuters) - Italian grid operator Terna TRN.MI and Tunisian electricity and gas operator STEG said on Wednesday they had awarded Hitachi Energy a contract worth about €770 million ($875 million) to build converter stations for the Elmed power link project.
The contract covers the construction of converter stations for the first electricity interconnection between Italy and Tunisia.
It marks the completion of the procurement process for the first high-voltage direct-current submarine link between Europe and North Africa.
The Elmed link will have a capacity of 600 megawatt and stretch about 220 kilometres, mostly through a submarine cable, reaching a maximum depth of around 800 metres in the Strait of Sicily.
The total investment in the electricity interconnection amounts to €1.42 billion, including €307 million euros from the European Commission.
