Textron tops quarterly results, plans industrial unit separation

April 30 (Reuters) - Textron TXT.N on Thursday beat Wall Street estimates for first-quarter profit and revenue, driven by higher aviation deliveries, and announced its intent to separate its industrial segment in a bid to streamline operations.

Shares of the Cessna business jet maker rose 4% before the bell following the results.

The separation, which is expected to be completed within 12 to 18 months, would result in the formation of a pure-play aerospace and defense company.

Textron's industrial segment designs and manufactures specialized vehicles, turf-care equipment and plastic fuel systems.

Its revenues had declined over the past few quarters as demand for recreational and commercial vehicles normalized after post-pandemic highs and global automotive production softened, prompting alternatives for the segment.

The company last year completed the sale of its powersports business under the specialized vehicles unit of the industrial segment.

Providence, Rhode Island-based Textron now looks to focus on its mainstay profitable businesses comprising Cessna and Beechcraft aviation, Bell rotorcraft and Textron Systems' aerospace and defense segments.

Its first-quarter revenue rose 12% from a year ago on strong growth in aircraft deliveries and aftermarket parts and services in the aviation segment, as well as a production ramp-up for the MV-75 Cheyenne tiltrotor aircraft program at the Bell segment.

Textron Aviation delivered 37 jets in the quarter ended April 4, up from 31 a year earlier, and 35 commercial turboprops, which was an increase from 30.

First-quarter adjusted profit stood at $1.45 per share, compared with analysts' average estimate of $1.30 per share, according to data compiled by LSEG.

Quarterly revenue of $4.18 billion came above estimates of $3.52 billion.
