First gas-fired power plant tender oversubscribed, German regulator says (updated)
UPDATE 1-First gas-fired power plant tender oversubscribed, German regulator says Adds details on scheme in paragraphs 3-4
DUESSELDORF, Sept 9 (Reuters) - A first tender for 4.5 gigawatts of gas-fired power plant capacity has been significantly oversubscribed, the country's energy regulator said on Wednesday, adding successful bidders would be announced by early November.
In order to safeguard security of supply in Europe's largest economy, Germany is tendering a total of 11 GW of capacity, with the current tender to be followed by additional rounds in December and in 2027.
The tender, which was initially agreed on in January, is designed to support Germany's plan to wean off coal by shifting to a less carbon-intensive fuel: gas.
Estimated to cost up to €35.2 billion ($41 billion), the scheme was last week approved by the European Commission. German utilities RWE RWEG.DE and Uniper UN0k.DE previously said they would aim to submit bids for a total of 4.7 GW.
