April 23 (Reuters) - VeriSign VRSN.O reported a 6.6% increase in first-quarter revenue on Thursday on the back of steady demand for domain name registrations driven by companies growing their digital presence.
Reston, Virginia-based VeriSign is among the domain registry service providers benefiting from a surge in businesses acquiring and renewing domain names as companies seek to expand their online reach.
Here are some details:
VeriSign operates critical internet infrastructure as the exclusive registry operator for the ".com" and ".net" domains. It also operates two of the world's 13 internet root servers.
The company generates revenue by charging registrars such as GoDaddy a fixed fee for each new domain registration and every annual renewal.
Revenue for the first quarter ended March 31 came in at $428.9 million, compared to the $402.3 million reported in the year-ago period.
VeriSign posted quarterly net income of $214.5 million, up from $199.3 million it reported last year.
It processed 11.5 million new domain registrations for ".com" and ".net" in the quarter, compared with 10.1 million in the same period a year ago.
