Waste Management misses quarterly profit, revenue estimates on weak pricing

Oct 27 (Reuters) - Waste Management WM.N missed third-quarter profit and revenue estimates on Monday, hit by weak pricing and slow growth in its healthcare waste collection business, sending shares of the company down 3.5% in after-hours trading.

The company also expects its annual revenue to be at the low end of its forecast at about $25.28 billion, citing a further decline in recycled commodity pricing and a modestly lower revenue expectation from its healthcare waste collection business.

It previously expected annual revenue to be between $25.28 and $25.48 billion. Analysts, on average, anticipate the company to report total revenue of $25.39 billion for the year, according to data compiled by LSEG.

Alongside municipal waste departments, WM and Republic Services RSG.N are two major companies that lead garbage collection across significant regions of the United States.

"Looking ahead, 2026 is setting up to be a year of outsized free cash flow growth, with results expected to approach $3.8 billion next year," CEO Jim Fish said in a statement.

Volumes in the company's collection and disposal business grew 0.2% year-over-year, driven by strong landfill volumes and growth in industrial collection volumes, but partially offset by a decline in residential collection volumes.

Its total revenue for the quarter ended September 30 came at $6.44 billion. Analysts had expected revenue of $6.50 billion.

The Houston, Texas-based company posted a quarterly adjusted profit of $1.98 per share, below analysts' average expectations of $2.02 per share, according to data compiled by LSEG.
