An insight into a Private Investors' portfolio... Is it safe to come out yet?? Q1 2022 Update

Hello again all, hope you are keeping well and that the markets haven't treated you too badly this year so far! It is quite a torrid time for now with lots of global uncertainty every way you look. My thoughts are still with the millions of innocent people affected by the war in Ukraine, they will want to get on with their lives as before but circumstances mean that things are extremely unsettled for now to say the least!

Keeping one eye on the macro environment we can see a fresh wall of worry for the markets this year with war, inflation, interest rate hikes, cost of living crisis. Maybe traders are having a ball with all this volatility? I have been reminded lately why I am not a trader - still running a business (wholesale bakery) pretty much full time is sure to mean we have to be able to take our eye of the ball from time to time to meet the needs and demands of business. More so recently than ever with so many price increases on raw materials, labour and services we have been in a constant state of flux revising prices with our customers only to find that further increases come along and wreak havoc again.

We can draw parallels from this to the stock market... are we invested in companies with pricing power? Can they raise prices without loosing their customers? All good questions to be asking and considering as we look for new investments or consider our existing holdings.

My year to date performance is nothing to shout about for now, at the end of Q1 I am nursing almost -13% return on my stock market investments. It is hard to look at hard earned gains eroding away as the market falls but I have to remind myself that this is a long term game and keep plodding on.

Hi Investor John

Nice posting thank you.

Your section about Alerts is a useful reminder to me.

I used them quite a lot in the past but have allowed the discipline to lapse (wrongly I feel).

I think in these choppy times your examples of both buy alerts as well as sell alerts is something I will pick up again straight away.

Nice post. I too use stockopedia a lot for alerts. Very useful. Previously I relied on IG for alerts but that was frustrating as they only last 3 months so alerts on stockopedia has been a god send. As for my personal portfolio, it is now back in profit so far this year mainly from my stocks I hold in precious metals. More to come from them hopefully. Nice work on the profitable portfolio @gmtrader ! Commodities and metals have held up nicely in these times which is your favourite?

I guess acting on the alerts takes discipline too! Its sometimes too easy to reset the alert and give it more room!

An excellent approach Investor John, I admit I don't have the income nor patience to hold cash until that Alert comes along. Being an aged OAP who can manage on their pension but go not much further than that, I reinvest dividends immediately, (not necessarily in the company which paid it) with the idea of maintaining the kids inheritance

No particular favourite, though I hope for good returns in Shanta Gold (LON:SHG) Hochschild Mining (LON:HOC) and Pan African Resources (LON:PAF) and then a long shot small investment in Rockhopper Exploration (LON:RKH) which will fail or become a 50bagger plus I hope.

There is much to recommend in this approach too. If this is your plan, and you stick to it, it will work out well in the long term.

It fact, it's probably the best option for the most people because timing is hard, really hard, and emotionally hard - constantly fretting over when the right time is. At least it is for many people, myself included, and I am, more or less, fully invested most of the time.

If timing works well for others I salute them and the point of this post is not to denigrate timing but rather to know thyself, as the saying goes.

Yes I think it is a different approach or fine tuned to suit each and every one of us.

Since I am still earning I can use alerts to highlight where I may deploy new cash. A bit like yourselves I don't often sit with much cash uninvested.

Don't they say it is time in the market and not timing the market...

They are all trending up nicely for now anyway! Hope they work out well for you...

I enjoyed reading it while looking for someone who'd covered Jarvis. We are looking at a loss too on the shares and although I have confidence the shares will rise again, I'm trying to decide whether to increase our holding now to get the special 3p dividend just announced, which is no doubt designed to do just that!

The dividend just announced by Jarvis Securities (LON:JIM) is their regular quarterly dividend (currently yielding 7-8%). I hold and like you think the shares will come back either with the return of retail investors or perhaps earlier if they can demonstrate a meaningful benefit from higher interest rates in H2.

I have set the Dividend to reinvest in Jarvis Securities (LON:JIM) so that is one way to gradually build a position
