Quarter 1 of 2021

Can you believe it is Easter of 2021 already!

Covid19 is still around unfortunately but hopefully the vaccine program is starting to have a positive effect on the number of cases and more importantly the number of deaths!

It has been a relatively quiet quarter for me so hence the prompt summary as there is not much to summarise!

Summary

My YTD performance has been good enough with a return at the 31st of March 2021 of 12.6% so steady progress so far. Has this been a result of less Tech stocks and more holdings in Financials and Cyclicals for now?

In general I have been sitting on my hands and monitoring progress. This meant that I only made 6 Trades in the first 3 months of this year so I will just give a quick comment on each…

Trades

08/01/2021 Buy Eckoh (LON:ECK) @62.98p – This was just a small top up in my SIPP to reinvest the spare cash in the account that had came in from dividends from Sylvania Platinum (LON:SLP) Eckoh (LON:ECK) and Solid State (LON:SOLI)

08/02/2021 Sell Loopup (LON:LOOP) @81.375p – Completely lost confidence here – was unsure when buying and conscious of a lot competition in hindsight should have steered clear. Loss of 29.4%

12/03/2021 Sell Ab Dynamics (LON:ABDP) @2040p Bed and ISA to move to alongside rest of ABDP holding

23/03/2021 Buy Ab Dynamics (LON:ABDP) @2060p Buying back most of the Bed and ISA shares from Corporate Account (Bought a slightly smaller amount to have nice neat quantities ending in zero maybe slightly OCD!)

23/03/2021 Buy Advancedadvt (LON:ADVT) @116p Don’t judge me lol! Buying a small amount here on the back of previous success of Vin…

No opinions on your stock selection I'm afraid John however was interested in the fact that you seem to be in the process of starting up a SSAS.

Hopefully you have chosen an administrator that imposes reasonable charges - something that I've suffered from in the past however a couple of years ago I came across:

They've just increased their charges for new clients however still a huge saving on what I was paying with the company I was with previously where the annual charge always seemed to increase substantially by time costed extras (something I've never experienced with SSAS Practitioners).

Thanks very much for that @laughton I am using a similar service called SSAS solutions who do the same as in set up as a scheme practitioner as opposed to a trustee which then means you have more flexibility. Your recommendation may still be slightly (looks like approx £500) cheaper at a glance. I will probably give them a call

The only thing i haven't sorted yet is an Execution only broker to operate within the SSAS that doesn't charge extortionate fees for a dated telephone only service... do you have this? Most SSAS brokers are discretionary only.

Hi John can I ask any particular reason you chose a SASS over a commercial Sipp ?

For brokers, I use iDealing.com and Hargreaves Lansdown.

Not sure what a "dated telephone only" service is. With both the above I can deal online or via telephone at their normal rates and normal annual/quarterly charge although hardly ever use telephone.

PS - and one of the banks that www.ssaspractitioner.com recommends (Cater Allen) actually pays interest and doesn't charge for the pleasure of having an account.

For the flexibility - the SSAS will be like a Trust for my family - it can have up to 11 members and will pass to next generation easily

My provider also uses Cater Allen so that's a plus

So to be clear you can deal within your SSAS using Hargreaves or iDealing??

Yes. The SSAS has had an account with both for years.
Maybe they've changed and no longer accept SSAS accounts but they haven't tried to get rid of me.

Just looked and can't find anything specific on HL site but iDealing do say they operate accounts for trusts.

I did have a SSAS account with AJ Bell but when I changed from a company trustee set up to a practitioner set up they asked me to leave.

I would say you have slipped through the net there because they all seem to require a independent trustee. I can only find 1 broker that I have to phone to deal and I can't do anything online with them not even view my account! (Also charges are nuts)

This is not a recommendation (sometimes I worry about how much I have invested through them) but have you tried iDealing.com?

They even seem to allow trusts to apply online (and a SSAS is, in effect, a trust).

Their offering is fairly basic (no research etc.) but logging on is simple, dealing is simple, charges are good and I've never had a problem with them.

Hi John

From your namesake well done; 12.6% is a good return for the quarter. If that can be repeated quarter on quarter, 2021 should be a vintage year. I have looked at your list of holdings and at present have three in common; Belvoir (LON:BLV), Premier Miton (LON:PMI) and £BMY.

My current top five holdings are Redde Northgate (LON:REDD), Volex (LON:VLX), Avingtrans (LON:AVG), Creightons (LON:CRL) and Itv (LON:ITV), although this changes periodically depending on share price performance as companies like Belvoir (LON:BLV) and Bloomsbury Publishing (LON:BMY) are close behind. Itv (LON:ITV) is the only 'large cap' in the portfolio of 26 stocks. I have recently top sliced Belvoir (LON:BLV), Volex (LON:VLX) and D4t4 Solutions (LON:D4T4) in order to keep the portfolio in balance; all of which are now trading at higher prices! But there is always the conundrum of running one's winners and maintaining the risk versus reward balance, which I am sure others also struggle with.

The portfolios I run for the family are in individual ISAs built up over several years. I have no knowledge of SSAS, but looks as if it may be worth finding out more about.
