John's Story

How did you pick investments before you used Stockopedia?

Before using Stockopedia I tended to follow bulletin boards and look for suggestions – I would then do some limited research, usually looking at the latest trading updates. This worked but it was a bit hit and miss. Another strategy I would use was to read company trading updates every morning and research/invest in those that said something like ‘ahead of expectations’ – this strategy yielded some results.

Has using Stockopedia changed your approach to investing?

Since using Stockopedia my investment approach has become much more informed and I pretty much use all the features on Stockopedia.

I definitely pay attention to the Stockopedia StockRanks, particularly those that show high value and momentum. Perhaps the biggest improvement has come from following the Small Cap Value Report pretty much every day, and in particular listening very carefully to what Paul Scott as to say. He gives a completely unbiased view. Just from reading his reports I have learnt so much about the data on each stock's StockReport. Jack Brumby is another I particularly follow and look forward to his articles on undervalued shares – he also aligns with my slightly higher risk profile.

I monitor my portfolio using the Stockopedia portfolio tool, and use it to make note of my investment decisions. I like the fact that you can hover over a particular metric or ratio and it will show you the trend.

I love using the charts, and always try to buy when the RSI is low or a golden cross is forming!

I am so glad that I took the decision to pay the subscription to Stockopedia all those years ago. I have learnt so much, have access to comprehensive but uncomplicated financial data, have charts and RNS information data all on one page. It is a bargain and I would recommend it to anyone who wants to research and invest properly.

Stockopedia also started a Staff Investing Club last year and started putting some of their pitches on the site which I always tend to read. I also loved the online StockSlam events and have researched about half of the stock ideas so far. I have not invested in any yet but about 3-4 are on my watchlists.

John uses Stockopedia to improve his confidence in his investment decisions

Has Stockopedia impacted your investment results or quality of life?

My investment results have improved considerably since joining Stockopedia. I now have much more confidence in my investment selections from the sage advice and tips I have picked up just by reading the Small Cap Value Report and using the site every day. The mobile-friendly version of the site has also been a game changer as you can see all the latest data anytime, anywhere.

In terms of quality of life, I think my investment style leans towards high risk, high reward type of stocks. This means you are always a little edgy, but as a long term investor I am usually prepared to wait to see if my investment decisions play out. I also regularly cut my losers, especially if you have a good investment option to put your.

What's your advice for investors that are just starting out?

My advice to others is always DYOR. Even though I trust Paul and Jack, you have to do your own research and having a tool like Stockopedia makes this a lot easier. You never stop learning and it is important to learn from the trusted sources which you have on Stockopedia.
