Jonathan's Story

How did you pick investments before you used Stockopedia?

Before I discovered Stockopedia I had read a lot of books on investing and I subscribed to Company REFS until its demise. I also regularly bought investing magazines and came across Stockopedia in a flyer from Investor's Chronicle a few years ago. Something caught my eye and when I read it I knew that this would be the ideal platform to help me refine my investment approach, particularly as I had read O’Shaughnessy’s ‘What Works on Wall Street’.

Has using Stockopedia changed your approach to investing?

I immediately subscribed and was absolutely thrilled at the layout, data, StockRanks and the whole approach - absolutely brilliant. Having the daily updates from Paul Scott and Jack Brumby is also a massive bonus and gives us subscribers a huge advantage.

Stockopedia has not completely changed my approach to investing but it has enabled me to become much better at selecting stocks with strong potential. I follow a high Quality/Momentum strategy. I have experienced excellent financial gains which in turn has led to substantial quality of life improvements.

Has Stockopedia impacted your investment results or quality of life?

My ISA portfolio doubled between 2015 and 2017 and I have used the gains to pay for an extension to my property. My SIPP has increased in value from £120k on 1 January 2020 to £171k today by generally following the StockRanks Quality/Momentum approach.

What's your advice for investors that are just starting out?

My advice to investors starting out is to subscribe to Stockopedia (absolutely essential) and to read as much as you can on the subject of investment. Develop a set of rules that you can stick to rigidly - the most important being to cut any losses at an absolute max of minus 25% below purchase price regardless of the reason for the drop. I try to encourage young people to start gaining experience in investing in shares early and not to leave it as long as I did.
