Cracker Barrel has caved. The folksy restaurant chain is reverting back to its decades-old logo, scrapping plans for a new one following social media backlash, including from US President Donald Trump. The company said in a social media post Tuesday it would bring back Uncle Herschel, the old-timer leaning against a barrel, rather than continue with its new streamlined logo. In return, investors gobbled up Cracker Barrel's shares, pushing them about 8% higher in Wednesday morning trading. And Trump posted a public thank-you on his social media site. The President was among a chorus of conservatives, along with his son Donald Jr., who had criticized the restaurant chain's new logo that simply displayed the chain's name against a barrel-shaped yellow silhouette. The backlash also hit Cracker Barrel's shares, wiping out their year-to-date gains. The incident was the most recent in a series of dustups where an unexpected response blindsided a retail chain. Anheuser-Busch's Bud Light sales slumped after it sent a can of Bud Light to a transgender influencer in 2023. And this summer, an American Eagle Outfitters ad campaign featuring actress Sydney Sweeney sparked backlash for that ad's use of the phrase "good jeans" as a play on genetics.
