April 17 (Reuters) - Spanish defence and technology group Indra IDR.MC and Iveco Defence Vehicles (IDV), a unit of Italy's Leonardo LDOF.MI, have struck a deal to supply 34 amphibious combat vehicles to Spain's armed forces, the companies said on Friday.
The vehicles, produced by IDV with mission systems supplied by Indra, were commissioned by Spain's Ministry of Defence as part of a programme to modernise the military.
Indra, which is partly owned by the Spanish state, has taken on a bigger role in the defence sector after NATO member Spain pledged to lift defence spending to 2% of gross domestic product.
Indra said it expected the partnership with IDV to extend to future joint ventures and to strengthen its value chain in combat platforms.
IDV's amphibious vehicles have already been purchased by the U.S. Marine Corps and the Italian Armed Forces, IDV Sales Director Nazario Bianchini said in a statement.
