POLITICS, ECONOMY

Group of Seven (G7) members and the European Union are considering price floors to promote rare earth production, as well as taxes on some Chinese exports to incentivise investment, according to a Reuters exclusive.

The Italian government has not discussed plans to freeze the retirement age at 67 as part of 2026 budget measures, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni told reporters on Wednesday, reacting to a Financial Times report on the issue.

CEO Philippe Donnet updated the board of Italy's top insurer about the negotiations with French bank BPCE's Natixis to combine their asset management businesses, a source close to the situation said on Wednesday, without elaborating further.

(*) A board meeting of Monte dei Paschi is scheduled this morning to discuss a slate of candidates for Mediobanca's new board, Italian daily Corriere della Sera reported on Thursday.

MPS' bold takeover of Mediobanca is the biggest deal yet in a merger wave transforming Italian banking, and its CEO has said it will position the combined entity for a further round of consolidation, according to a Reuters analysis.

The Italian bank said on Thursday it would issue a euro-denominated stablecoin with ING, Banca Sella, KBC, Danske Bank, Dekabank, SEB, Caixabank and Raiffeisen.

The Italian energy group completed the sale of its 30% stake to Vitol in the Baleine project in Cote d'Ivoire, the company said on Thursday.

The carmaker returned to sales growth in Europe for the first time in over a year, as the overall market expanded with a boost from plug-in hybrid (PHEV) and battery-electric (BEV) sales. Registration were up 2.2%, growing for the first time since February 2024.

The acquisition of PagoPA, the Treasury-owned platform that handles digital payments to the public administration, is in its final stages and expected to be completed by early October, with Poste acquiring a 51% stake and the Italian State Mint and Polygraphic Institute holding the remaining 49%, Italian daily Corriere della Sera said on Thursday.

Extraordinary shareholders' meeting on approval of the joint cross-border merger plan for the incorporation of Subsea 7 SA into Saipem SpA (0730 GMT) in Milan.

BANCO BPM BAMI.MI

Italy's government will set so-called "golden power" conditions on a possible tie-up between Banco BPM and the Italian unit of France's Credit Agricole, Economy Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti said on Wednesday.

The Trump administration issued a formal notice on Wednesday implementing the U.S. trade agreement with the European Union, confirming that autos and auto parts imports will be subject to a 15% duty from August 1 and listing exemptions for certain pharmaceutical compounds, all aircraft and aircraft parts, and certain natural resources.

The Italian energy group and Seri Industrial have initiated operations for a project to produce stationary lithium batteries in southern Italy, the companies said in a joint statement on Wednesday.

MFE-MediaForEurope MFEB.MI, the commercial broadcaster controlled by Italy's Berlusconi family, on Wednesday posted a 22.5% annual fall in its operating profit in the first half of the year.

General Manager Damien Comolli is set to be promoted to the CEO position, replacing Maurizio Scanavino, according to several media reports, adding that the club is also expected on Friday to report a lower loss of 40-50 million euros for the 2024-2025 period.
