Police in India are investigating a deadly car explosion in Delhi under the country's main anti-terrorism law, the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act. That was according to an officer on Tuesday. Police say at least 8 people were killed and 20 injured on Monday evening when a slow-moving car exploded near the historic Red Fort. The blast occurred just before 7:00PM local time, leaving mangled bodies and damaging several vehicles on a congested street near a metro station in the old quarter of the capital. Residents described hearing a loud explosion. Relatives of the victims on Tuesday gathered outside the Lok Nayak Hospital to identify the bodies of their loved ones and search for missing family members.
They are not telling us anything. There is one guy, Navman, we don't know his whereabouts. We at least know that my cousin is here, whether he is injured or not or the extent of his injury, we don't know anything.
The Red Fort, a 17th-century Mughal-era structure is a major tourist attraction and a site where the Prime Minister addresses the nation on India's Independence Day every August 15. The explosion is a rare incident in the heavily guarded city of more than 30 million people. Authorities said the financial capital Mumbai and the state of Uttar Pradesh, which borders Delhi, were put on high alert. The US Embassy in Delhi issued a security warning to its citizens, urging them to avoid crowds in areas around the Red Fort and stay alert in places frequented by tourists. Federal Home Minister Amit Shah said all angles were being investigated and security agencies would come to a conclusion soon. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences to those who lost loved ones and said those responsible would be brought to justice.
