Tokyo Steel to hike prices in May as raw material costs climb

TOKYO, April 21 (Reuters) - Tokyo Steel Manufacturing 5423.T, Japan's top electric-arc furnace steelmaker, will raise prices for all steel products by about 2%-5% in May to reflect higher costs, including raw materials, the company said on Monday.

This marks a second consecutive monthly hike across all products, including Tokyo Steel's main H-shaped beams.

For May, hot-rolled coil prices will rise 5.4% to 98,000 yen ($616) per metric ton, while steel bars, including rebar, will increase 3.4% to 90,000 yen per ton. H-shaped beams will climb 4.6% to 113,000 yen per ton.

Prolonged Middle East conflicts and a surge in crude oil prices have driven up raw material and energy costs, lifting procurement expenses in the steel sector and prompting manufacturers to keep raising prices to restore profitability, the company said.

Prices of steel imports to Japan have also risen, while enquiries and orders for machinery to improve energy efficiency and reduce labour needs are increasing, likely driving higher capital investment at home and abroad, Tokyo Steel said.

The steelmaker's pricing is closely watched by Asian rivals such as South Korea's Posco 005490.KS and Hyundai Steel 004020.KS, and China's Baoshan Iron & Steel Co Ltd (Baosteel) 600019.SS.
