Retained Earnings Per Share refers to the portion of net income which is retained by the company rather than distributed to its owners as dividends. This is calculated by dividing Retained Earnings by the total number of Shares Outstanding. This is measured on a TTM basis.
Retained Earnings is the accumulated value of all Net Income figures the company has recorded to date, net of any dividends paid.
Companies are required to have positive Retained Earnings in order to pay out dividends and so it is vital that a company adds to this figure through the accumulation of Net Profits.
This is measured on a TTM basis.
